The general manager of Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari amusement park in Santa Claus, Ind., was seriously upset Monday in a car bump into while powerful to work.
Matt Eckert, 37, who has worked at the park for 11 years and served as general boss for more than three, was driving south on Ind. 162 in Spencer province in face of Nancy Hanks straightforward School just before 7:30 a.m. when a train bus that had just dropped off students made a left turn onto the main road, pulling in front of him, according to a police report and Paula Werner, presenter for the park.
Eckert struck the side of the bus and the front of his Honda SUV was caught under the bus. He had to be cut out of the car by rescuers, Werne said.
Eckert, the minister of three children, was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, where as of Monday evening he was listed in dangerous but stable condition, Werne said.
“He’s a wonderful person,” Werne said. “There’s lots and lots of worry in the theme park industry for him.”
Apparently Eckert was driving at the back another school bus that was rotating into the school, which might have obstructed the view of the other bus driver, Werne said.
That driver, Myra Dempsey, was not hurt, according to the police report.
Eckert assumed more duties at Holiday World last year after the sudden bereavement of the park’s co-owner, Will Koch. The 48-year-old Koch drowned at his house in June, which his family said was likely due to complications with diabetes.
It’s hard on a personal level,” Werne said of the latest disaster. “We hold out great hope that he’ll be back with us in time for season’s opening.
